Editing a firmware file in a hexadecimal, or hex, editor can allow you to modify a device's behavior. For example, you can change the speed of manufacturing equipment or enable hidden features on a router or cell phone by editing their firmware files. Editing the values of a file by using a hexadecimal editor can be daunting due to the fact that such a program displays cryptic raw machine code. It is therefore crucial to properly learn how to navigate through the file within the editor before attempting to edit its contents.
HxD
.Download the ZIP archive containing HxD from the MH-Nexus.de website.
.Double-click on the downloaded archive to open it.
.Launch the installation program by double-clicking on the 'Setup.exe' file.
.Click on 'Next,' read the license terms and, if you accept them, click on 'I accept' and click on 'Next' three times.
.Select 'Install' and wait for the program to finish the installation process.
.Launch HxD and click on 'File.' Select 'Open' and use the file browser to locate the firmware file on your hard drive.
.Locate the hexadecimal value that you wish to edit. HxD's interface, like the one of other similar hex editors, has three distinct panes – the left pane which contains the address of the hex values, the middle one with the hexadecimal values themselves and the right-hand one which contains the ASCII, or standard text, translation of the hexadecimal values. Most websites, when giving instructions on how to edit a specific firmware file, list the address of the hexadecimal values that should be modified. Find that address by using either the editor's built-in search tool or by scrolling down. You can access the search tool by opening the 'Search' menu and selecting 'Find.'
.Click on the hexadecimal value you want to change and type a new value.
.Save your file by opening the 'File' menu and clicking on 'Save.'
